We would love to have an opportunity to help you and your church “make disciples who make disciples”—lifelong disciplemakers! This is clearly evident in the apostle Paul's disciplemaking ministry, as he reflects to his young protoge Timothy: "and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also" (2 Timothy 2:2).
Indeed, such disciplemakers live and minister with the heart of the Savior—a heart of compassion—as reflected in Jesus’ call for His disciples to pray for harvest workers in Matthew 9:35-10:1. Here's how He put it: “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (v. 37). In light of this, lifelong disciplemakers are sometimes referred to as "lifelong laborers in the harvest"!
One key way we do this is walking individuals or church teams through The Ways of the Alongsider. Each time we do, we hear inspirational stories about the unique ways God uses this material to help individuals make a Kingdom difference where they live, work, play, and worship.
In fact, you'll find one such inspirational story here. It's titled "Kingdom Impact in the Workplace: Coming Alongside Co-Workers." This also includes an overview of how an alongsider structures discipleship.
Another way we do this is through our “Discipling Others” Seminar, an in-depth opportunity for small or large groups “to encourage, motivate, train, and launch Christians in discipling others.”
Here’s what we focus on in “Discipling Others”:
Session 1: Vision for Making Disciples
Session 2: Ministering Life-to-Life
Session 3: Getting Started—Creating a Discipling Environment
It’s all toward raising up laborers who live in light of Jesus’ Greatest Commandment (and Second Like It) from Matthew 22:34-40 and Jesus' Great Commission from Matthew 28:18-20.
Goals of the Seminar
- To embrace a clear vision from God to make disciples.
- To define the end product and the process of disciplemaking.
- To understand the biblical principles for making disciples and to know how to apply these in today’s culture.
You may be asking, "What is a Lifelong Disciplemaker?" We've created an assessment to help you not only understand the five key characteristics of such a Christ-follower but the extent to which you are a "laborer in the harvest." You will find the assessment here. For a Spanish version, click here.
In addition, the Sequoia Team (Russian Church Discipleship Ministry) has added a section that will help you assess your "Timothys" and translated it into Russian—you'll find the English version here and the Russian version here.
You may wish to do the following:
Take the assessment:
- What is one strength that you might strengthen all the more?
- What is one area of growth in which you could trust God for progress?
- What is one practical action step you can take within the next 24 hours?
Use the assessment in your personal ministry to help the men and women with whom you minister to assess where they are in terms of laboring in the harvest and to answer the three questions above as well.
